Relay Teams

Experience the thrills of an IRONMAN 70.3 by sharing the fun as a relay team!

Whether you're preparing for your first IRONMAN 70.3 relay or returning for another epic experience, one thing’s for sure: racing in a relay team is a sure way to have a great race day experience and share the fun!

There’s nothing like cheering your teammates on through their legs and then crossing that finish line together.

Relay teams can consist of two or three people—you decide how to divide the swim (1.9km), bike (90km), and run (21.1km) legs.

So, the real question is… who will be on your relay team?

Race Week Info

All relay team members must attend athlete check-in in person and sign their individual athlete waiver. Any athlete who has not completed their waiver will not be permitted to race.

At check-in, you’ll collect your team’s race kit. If the team does not check in together, the first team member to check in will receive the entire race pack and will be responsible for distributing the relevant items to the rest of the team.

Each team member will receive:

  • An athlete wristband
  • An athlete tee
  • A street gear bag

In addition:

  • The swimmer will receive a swim cap (colour-coded based on start wave)
  • The cyclist will receive bike and helmet stickers
  • The runner will receive a run bib and number tattoo

The cyclist will collect the team’s timing chip after racking their bike in transition. The timing chip acts as your relay baton and must be worn on the left ankle by each athlete during their leg.

  • The swimmer starts the race with the timing chip
  • In transition, they pass the chip to the cyclist
  • After completing the ride, the cyclist passes the chip to the runner

All athletes should familiarise themselves with the transition layout and know exactly where their cyclist is racked to ensure smooth changeovers on race day.

Race Day Info

  • Cyclists must enter transition during the designated access times (as outlined in the Athlete Information Guide).
  • Helmets must be worn and will be checked by an AusTri official before the cyclist is allowed into transition.
  • Once the bike is racked and the chip is collected, cyclists can re-enter via the designated Teams entry/exit point.

The timing chip continues to serve as your team’s baton throughout the race:

  1. Swimmer begins with the timing chip and completes the 1.9km swim.
  2. They run into transition and pass the chip to the cyclist in the relay team bike rack area.
  3. The cyclist completes the 90km ride and returns to transition to hand over the chip to the runner.
  4. The runner completes the 21.1km course and meets the team in the finish chute.
